The Velveteen Rabbit

The Skin Horse had lived longer in the nursewry than any of the others. He was so old that his brown coat was bald in patches and showed the seams underneath and most of the hairs in his tail had been pulled out to string bead necklaces. He was wise, for he had seen a long succession of mechanical toys arrive to boast and swagger and by-and-by break their mainsprings and pass away, and he knew that they were only toys, and would never turn into anything else. for nursery magic is very strange and wonderful and only those playthings that are old and wise and experienced like the Skin Horse understand all about it.
"What is REAL?" asked the Rabbit one day, when they were lying side by side near the nursery fender, before Nana came to tidy the room. "Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?"
"REAL isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you when a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become REAL."
... "It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are REAL, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are REAL you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

Thought for the Day

There are two lasting bequests we can give our children.
One is roots. The other is wings.

Rosalee and Gus

Two new Southern Bears - Rosalee and Gus. These two bears are absolutely best friends. Rosalee is a sweet little girl who whispers tales of fairies to all the bears and Gus has already been awarded a Noddy badge for good behaviour. When Rosalee tells her tales, Gus plays with the little wooden train. I so enjoyed creating these friends and was delighted with the personalities that emerged.

Queensland, Australia

Amidst all the abundance in our lives, let us stop for a while and say a prayer for the thousands of people who have lost their homes, possessions and livelihoods in Queensland Australia. Because my daughter lives in Gracemere, a suburb of Rockhampton, I have been following all the reports on the news and have cried so many tears for those people. Thank the Lord my child and her family have been safe because they are on higher ground but the disaster has affected their business too and 6 years hard work and determination have been washed away by the waters. I have been to Rockhampton twice and it is heartbreaking to see that lovely area covered in water. We take so many things for granted in our lives, so let us all be grateful and thankful that we still have what we have.

Candy's progress (1)

Thank you for all the comments on my "Candy" post. I made a start this weekend with knitting "Candy". 4 ply wool and thiiiiiiin knitting needles - I'm used to working with double knitting and chunky needles. However, I have completed one leg, one shoe/sock and one bow and thoroughly enjoyed it despite the fact that my knitting skills are very rusty. You will all be kept in the loop regarding her progress.
Have a wonderfully creative week.

"Candy" Bear

Sugar and spice and all things nice ... Candy, the little baby polar bear. I simply could not resist. I ordered this knitting pattern from Susan at http://www.maryjanestearoom.com and tomorrow I am off to buy the wool.
Whilst mohair bears and friends are my passion, lately I am having difficulty with the hand sewing of the bears at night. Perhaps I'm tired, perhaps it's A.G.E. but now I can still busy myself with a bear AND watch telly. This little bear and her twin sister would love to live with my granddaughters Georgia and Abigail.
Pop in and meet the lovely little characters and enjoy beautiful photographs at maryjanestearoom and buy some of Candy's favourite sugar bonbons!
